Can you believe it, this will be the last newsletter for the school year 2008/2009!

The school-wide Olympics was a great success; everyone was a winner. Yearbooks will be given out this week. Our field trip is Wednesday, please make certain your child has an outer garment, as it may be cold. Also please put sunscreen on your child before they leave home that morning. Lunch will be provided.

Please remember that Wednesday is a full day and Friday is a short day.

We’ve had a busy week finishing up assessments for the district and working hard on end of the year projects. The pizza party was loads of fun. The children ran and climbed their hearts out. Many children were tired with filled up tummies by the time we got back to the classroom. Thanks so much to Jennifer Benson for the pizza, Cindy Morgan for the yummy treats and Maria Meade for the refreshing cantaloupe.

We should have a lot of fun on Friday with the school-wide Rio Olympics. Please return permission slips ASAP so your child can participate. If anyone did not purchase a yearbook previously and would like to purchase one now contact Mary Zimmer.

Drivers for the field trip on Wednesday, June 3 should be in the classroom at 9:30. I will send an e-mail out to the drivers.

FIRST GRADE HOMEWORK

Research shows that one of the most important factors in helping children develop reading fluency is time spent reading with an adult. With this in mind, your child will be required to spend 15-20 minutes a night reading with an adult. Additionally after winter break math practice will be required as well. The homework log should be filled out daily and returned to me at the end of each week. (If you do not have a log, just jot the information down on another piece of paper). The hope is that this will be a very special time for you and your child to share the joys of reading and math.

STAR OF THE WEEK

Sharing the rich history of our families’ ancestry and role in our community is the focus of the Star of the Week. Star of the Week covers mapping, understanding that people, places and things change over time, and understanding we all have roles in the community, all part of our 1st grade standards.

Monday - Send in a poster about the star and their family and any childhood special treasures.
Tuesday - Send in a map showing family origins and any cultural items.
Thursday - Parents are welcome to set up a time to come in and talk about their jobs or interests.
Friday - Send in a family tree. Pick up hermit crabs for the weekend.

Scholastic Book Orders

I will be sending home Scholastic book orders throughout the year. The books are reasonably priced and for each book purchased, I get bonus points with which to purchase more books for our class. Reading is one of the best gifts you can give to your child and having books at home allows your child to read and reread which is important for beginning readers. Below are two options for placing your orders.

The first is the traditional method. You fill in the order and return it with your check. If you order from more than one of the catalogs, you only need one check.

The second option is meant to be easier for everyone, ordering your books online. You will not have to mess with order forms and writing checks and can place the order with your credit card on their secure web-site.
